Staff at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) have taken part in the Great British Spring Clean this week, with teams from Estates, Facilities and Sustainability spending time improving the grounds and surrounding outdoor spaces of the Trust's hospital sites.
The event marked the third year that DBTH has organised a community litter pick. Volunteers collected litter and maintained green spaces across hospital sites, supported by partners including the Darwin Group and the Rapid Relief Team, who provided refreshments for everyone taking part.
'Cleaner and more welcoming'
“The trust is proud to support environmental initiatives that bring colleagues together and make our communities cleaner and more welcoming.”
— Adeola Bayode, Waste Manager at DBTH
“Maintaining clean surroundings improves the experience for patients, visitors and staff, while recognising the hospital's role in the wider local community.”
— Mathew Gleadall, Operational Director of Estates and Facilities, DBTH
Green Flag-standard grounds
DBTH has invested in maintaining green spaces across its estate over recent years, with some areas of the hospital grounds achieving Green Flag Award status – the national benchmark for well-managed green spaces.
For Worksop and Bassetlaw readers, the same Trust runs Bassetlaw Hospital on Kilton Hill in Worksop, meaning the benefits of these environmental and estate-maintenance investments are felt locally as well as at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Montagu Hospital in Mexborough.
More to come on World Environment Day
Further opportunities for staff to get involved in sustainability initiatives are planned around World Environment Day on 5 June 2026, the Trust confirmed. The annual global event, led by the United Nations, highlights action on climate, biodiversity and pollution.
