Clarborough and Welham Parish Pastures now has a brand-new wheelchair-accessible picnic table, giving disabled residents and visitors the chance to enjoy the community green space alongside family and friends for the first time.

The inclusive table was funded by a £700 community grant from Cllr Fraser McFarland, the Bassetlaw District Council Ward Member for Clayworth. Every Bassetlaw councillor is allocated a small annual budget which they can use at their own discretion to support local projects covering sport, culture, heritage, environmental sustainability, social welfare and general community benefit.

Parish Council: 'A welcoming space for everyone'

“We're delighted to see the installation of the new accessible picnic table at the Parish Pastures. This improvement means wheelchair users can now enjoy the space more fully, helping to ensure the Pastures remain a welcoming and inclusive area for everyone in our community.

“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Cllr Fraser McFarland for his generous grant support, which has helped make this enhancement possible.”

— Phil Gibson, Chair of Clarborough and Welham Parish Council

Councillor: 'An inclusive place for residents'

“I'm really pleased to support this project, which helps make the Parish Pastures more accessible for everyone in our community. The new picnic table will ensure wheelchair users can enjoy the space alongside friends and family, reinforcing the Pastures as an inclusive place for residents to relax and spend time outdoors.

“It's great to see the Parish Council continuing to develop the area for the benefit of local people.”

— Cllr Fraser McFarland, Bassetlaw District Council Ward Member for Clayworth

How councillor community grants work

Each of Bassetlaw District Council's elected councillors receives a small annual pot of money to distribute to causes in their ward. Projects are chosen at the councillor's discretion and can cover anything from sports equipment and playground improvements to heritage conservation and accessibility upgrades like this one. Community groups and parish councils can approach their local ward member directly to discuss potential projects.
