Bassetlaw District Council is asking its tenants, leaseholders and other stakeholders to have their say on a new draft Housing Repairs Policy – the document that sets out how and when repairs to council homes will be carried out, and who is responsible for what.
The consultation opened on Monday 20 April 2026 and runs until Sunday 31 May 2026. Information and survey forms are being posted to every council tenant in Bassetlaw to make sure everyone has the chance to take part.
Why the policy is being rewritten
The new draft has been produced following an independent review of the council's repairs and maintenance service, which identified a number of issues and inconsistencies that can cause delays and inefficiency for tenants. The review was followed by several months of detailed work by a Steering Group made up of tenants, cross-party elected members and council officers, supported by external Housing Consultants since March 2025.
The Steering Group has looked at:
- Repair timescales – how quickly different categories of repair should be carried out
- Tenant obligations – what tenants are expected to do or report
- Rechargeable repairs – repairs for which tenants can be charged
- Service operating hours – when repairs can be booked and carried out
The proposed changes aim to make sure repairs are “completed right first time”, enable the council to plan work in a more efficient way, and clearly set out who is responsible for fixing what.
'We want to hear from our tenants'
“We want to hear from our tenants about these proposed changes to our Housing Repairs Policy.
“We hope people will take the time to provide their feedback which will help us make informed decisions ahead of the draft policy being presented to cabinet in the summer.”
— Cllr Lynne Schuller, Bassetlaw District Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Estates
Meeting statutory obligations
The draft policy also continues to ensure the council, as a landlord, is meeting its statutory and regulatory obligations under the Regulator of Social Housing's Consumer Standards, which set out how social housing providers are expected to treat tenants.
What happens next
Feedback from the consultation will be fed into the final draft Housing Repairs Policy. The policy is then scheduled to go to:
- Cabinet – July 2026
- Full Council – for approval
- Adoption proposed – September 2026
