A 40-year-old Retford man has been sentenced to two years and two months in prison after suffocating and biting his former partner while under the influence of cocaine.

Jayvon Baker, formerly of Whitehall Court, Retford, pinned his ex-partner to a bed and placed his elbow across her throat during a terrifying 20-minute ordeal. He also bit her arm during the attack.

The victim managed to call 999 during the assault. When police arrived and arrested Baker, officers found six bags of cocaine in his possession.

Baker was initially convicted at Nottingham Magistrates Court on 11 February before the case was sent to the Crown Court for sentencing due to the severity of the offence.

Recorder Stuart Sprawson sentenced Baker to a total of two years and two months in prison, reflecting the seriousness of both the violent assault and the drug offences.

The sentence sends a clear message that courts in Nottinghamshire will deal firmly with perpetrators of domestic abuse, particularly where drug use is an aggravating factor.
