Lidl has submitted plans for a new supermarket on a vacant site beside Worksop train station after years of searching for a location in the town.
The German discount chain wants to build a 20,500 square foot food store on the brownfield plot. If approved, the development would create up to 40 new jobs locally and inject fresh retail competition into Worksop's high street and out-of-town shopping.
The site next to the station has been empty for some time, making it an attractive option for development. Lidl's arrival would mark a significant addition to Worksop's retail offer. The chain currently has no presence in Bassetlaw, though stores operate in nearby towns.
The full planning application is now before Bassetlaw District Council. Local residents and businesses will have the chance to comment on the proposals during the public consultation period. The council will assess the application against its planning policies before making a decision.
If given the green light, the store would be one of the most visible new developments in Worksop in recent years, breathing new life into a long-neglected area near the railway.
