Retford's War Memorial will host a special re-dedication ceremony on Sunday 10th May at 2:30pm to recognise Thomas Henry Ellis, a serviceman with local connections who died serving his country in 1941.
Ellis originally enlisted with the Duke of Wellington Regiment, later joining the Yorkshire Regiment. He was born in 1914 but was killed whilst serving in the North African campaign on 21st March 1941, where he was buried at the time.
The service will see members of the Royal British Legion, The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment Association, and Bassetlaw District Council officials join Ellis's descendants at the memorial. The ceremony will be led by Reverend Dick Lewis and will include a tribute from Ellis's nephew, a two-minute silence, and the laying of wreaths.
Stan Davies, Chairman of Retford's Royal British Legion branch, said the memorial must continue to add the names of veterans who have passed away. "We must never forget the sacrifice of those who served to protect this great country," he said.
Council Chair Tony Eaton added that the re-dedication "reaffirms our commitment to remembrance and ensures their legacy will continue to be recognised by future generations."
