Bassetlaw District Council has secured 24 new affordable homes to add to its housing stock, with properties spread across two new-build developments and the open market.
Where Are the New Homes?
The council is purchasing 12 two-bedroom homes at Gleeson's Firbeck Fields development in Langold, along with 10 homes at the Vistry Hall Park Estate in Gateford. A further two properties have been bought on the open market.
All 24 homes will be let at 80 per cent of market rent, making them significantly more affordable than private rentals in the same areas.
Part of a Larger Housing Effort
The council currently manages 6,698 properties across 49 parishes in the Bassetlaw district. The 24 new homes represent a modest but welcome addition to that stock at a time when demand for affordable housing continues to outstrip supply.
The purchases are funded through capital receipts and Housing Revenue Account reserves. The council has also provisionally earmarked further funding for additional acquisitions over the next five years, signalling a longer-term commitment to growing its housing stock.
Affordable Housing Crisis
The need for affordable homes in Bassetlaw remains acute. Private rental costs have risen sharply across the district in recent years, while the council's housing waiting list continues to grow. The gap between average local wages and housing costs is particularly challenging for younger residents and families.
Several major housing developments are also progressing across the district, including over 1,000 new homes approved south of Retford and 89 homes planned near Worksop train station. However, the proportion of genuinely affordable units within those developments varies significantly.
