New powers to tackle anti-social driving came into force across Bassetlaw on 1 April, giving police and council officers the ability to issue on-the-spot fines to nuisance drivers.

The Nuisance Vehicle Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) target a range of behaviours including the sounding of horns, playing loud music from vehicles, performing stunts, and attending gatherings that cause a public nuisance.

Anyone who breaches the order faces a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100. If the matter is taken to court, magistrates can impose fines of up to £1,000 following a successful conviction. The council can also apply for a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) against persistent offenders.

The new orders follow a public consultation, which found strong support from residents who had been affected by vehicle-related anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhoods.

Bassetlaw District Council said it will work closely with Nottinghamshire Police to use the new powers to target those using their vehicles to cause nuisance, annoyance, harassment, alarm, and distress.

The PSPOs sit alongside the existing town centre Public Spaces Protection Orders for Worksop and Retford, which were renewed in June 2025 and run until June 2028.
