The White Swan pub in Dunham on Trent has been hit with substantial fines after breaching food safety law.

Bassetlaw District Council's Environmental Health Officers visited the pub on 21 August 2025 and served a hygiene improvement notice on Rescom Freehouse Ltd, which operated the premises. Inspectors found dirty premises and equipment, out-of-date food with no proper disposal system, and staff who had not been trained in food safety procedures.

When officers returned on 11 September, the problems had not been fixed. The pub's director, Kevin Sprague, and the company pleaded guilty at Mansfield Magistrates Court on 5 March 2026.

Rescom Freehouse Ltd was ordered to pay £8,000 in fines, £2,000 victim surcharge, and £1,300 costs. Sprague was fined £614, with victim surcharge of £246 and costs of £1,300.

The council confirmed Sprague has since made positive changes to how the pub is run, suggesting improvements are now in place.

Cllr Darrell Pulk, the council's Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: "We will take robust action where businesses fail to comply with food safety law. We support businesses in meeting legal requirements while protecting public health and maintaining confidence in local food establishments."
